The project is led by Equinor and anchored in our Saltend Chemicals Park. It comprises a large scale auto thermal reformer (ATR) which converts natural gas to hydrogen. The CO2 produced during the conversion will be captured and transported offshore for sub-sea storage. The decarbonised hydrogen is known as blue hydrogen.
The ATR plant will be coupled with new low carbon chemical production and the blue hydrogen will be used as a feedstock that will integrate into existing manufacturing processes, infrastructure and utility distribution networks. It will enable the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant which provides power and steam to the manufacturers at Saltend to fuel switch from natural gas to hydrogen and could lead to further synergies with other industrial users at Saltend Chemicals Park and the wider region.
This will reduce CO2 emissions from Saltend by nearly 1million tonnes per year initially and will further cut emissions over time.
